TT upgrade update

Whew! Finally, I'd consider it completed! Only cosmetic touch up to be done.
Basically the plinth has been reinforced, the OEM signal cable has been replaced with a pair of output RCA sockets for which I can properly use an 'audio quality' RCA cable to connect to the amp(phono) input.
Whats left? Isolation 'feet' to be installed. Couldn't decide to use rubber or metallic cone.. will have to do some serious auditioning at night if there would be any differences at all!
Last night initial listening I do detect a more solid imaging to the sound stage.. how much does this 'mod' cost me? Few ringgit! The only costly thing that I bought to complete the work is a portable/battery operated multispeed drill..
Now that my TT is given a new 'life' I am itching to build a phono(RIAA) preamp. A module that would complement the D'Bomb or the Det'nator...
Sorry folks no pics at this point of time, will update later. Now can concentrate on the Det'nator (GBY's) and D'Phone (MDZ's) hehehe..
Have a great weekend guys! I know I would.. ;)

Tak lame lagi...

Been long never have any post here...so I think I'll start with something...

Jazzy...after made some reading about discreet circuit I now conclude that a discreet circuit is actually a circuit that doesn't employ any IC on it but instead uses only raw single component such as resistor, transistor, caps etc which contributes to the sonics performance of the amps like Det'nator...rite or wrong here??? Correct me if I'm wrong.

But I still can see the opamp chip at the Det'nator...bro why still use opamp chip?

jazzy939 said...

GBY,
whoa so observant!
the opamp is just the 'pre-amp' part of it! power amp is full bodied discreet!
you happy now? :D I am...

Gabanyayaya said...

Hoho balik kampung ka? So quiet here lah...!!!

Oh patut la...that opam is for the pre circuit....tough belong to the power amp part....sorry la bro, baru nak blaja. New kid in the blok...so many things to learn. But ok lorrrr...hifi is not just burning your wallet for new item. You learn new thing from it. I know I did... Specially when there's a 'guru' here (bodek....)

Can I say the amp is a Class A..???

What....happy...!!! You'll know I happy when I touch the amp la....:)

MadZiZ said...

Too technical for me!!!! Ring ring.....bila lah nak dengar ring ring??? LOL :P

jazzy939 said...

GBY,
No worries.. everyone start from zero ler.. me included. Nah definitely NOT a Class A, more like a class AB. Noted.. will get in in your hands ASAP, probably after my oversea trip.. insyaallah..
That includes your ring-ring too, MDZ!

Gabanyayaya said...

madziz you hear that...I'll get it ASAP muhahahah.....:)

jazzy i just got all parts for repairing job mention before...just get your solder gun hot and loaded...

I wonder how's madziz setup looks like now???

MDZ now back to basics. His DAC on the blink! That PS Audio wont process coax input but optical is working fine. With me now, I peeked inside, visually can't fault any component. However the logic switching ICs has 'kaput' need to replace those which I do not know which one. NO wiring diagram or an oscilloscope to trouble shoot.
So it's sitting pretty on top of my TT doing nothing.

Quick audition and against my existing Audio Alchemy, found the PS AUdio vocals are more forward. Generally the midrange are more emphasized. Great if you like vocals!

Good news is that I might get some hard to get parts from Europe when I am overseas next week. Just for your Det'nator, GBY. I am looking at torroids and some electronics. :D

Back to basic...haha I wonder how does his face looks like.....

You know this is the cons we have buying 2nd item la....low prices but risky....but The Audio Alchemy is still in good condition rite....simple mod will make it sound better la bro specially power supply section. I found this link that might interest you --->

http://eddie.dyec.com.tw

Parts from overseas...torroids....muhahaha...:) Every time I get news from you makes me so horny....

GBY,
Forgot to update this.
During the session trying to figure out whats wrong with the PS Audio,my Audio Alchemy went kaput! I was swearing to the PS Audio! Then I found out due to 'shorting' of the poorly use stereo miniature plug for the power supply, the transformer was 'terribly' hot to the touch. After slight cooling, managed to chop open the sealed casing of the transformer, cutting my finger during the process with a hacksaw, darn!
The secondary coils has burnt and opened circuit! The built-in rectifier stage is nothing to shout at, real cheapy design. Outside the casing I saw these words: High current power supply. Oh really? only 400mA max!
Within a few minutes with parts I have, the Audio Alchemy is singing again with a spanking new and obviously better PSU than supplied!(150VA transformer)

So I was ahead with a better PSU! But appreciate the comment and link. I have feeling that a good PSU would benefit the Audio Alchemy. Well a torroid might be on the way... ;)

jazzy939 said...

GBY,
Actually I had visited that link. Was aware of that PSU design. I think I can do better ;)

Gabanyayaya said...

Oh well...true hustler....better that the professional. I am so slow than you.... :(

I guess that Audio Alchemy is back again..

Is there any limit in changing power trans. for every appliances? Don't the dac ever burn with overload trans. like 150VA instead the sock trans. ???

BTW you want to change Det'nator 3A trans. to a torroids...!!! Though 3A is sufficient like you said before....why ??? want more power or quality...???

jazzy939 said...

GBY,
Having a 150VA doesn't mean you're always consuming that much! It's just the headroom that the PSU have if power demands go that high. An overkill but heyy I had that transformer as a spare ;)

Nah, there is always a limit to improvements. BTW, when I use the word 'better' it can also mean more simpler and functional! The link PSU really looks good, if you were to compare the stock PSU, its like langit dgn bumi. Mine is somewhere in between.Remember, it is always my quest to get 'best bang for buck' stuffs. If I were to buy the stock PSU from Audio ALchemy, it's sure gonna cost a bomb! PSU designs are NOT that hard, and the Audio Alchemy does not demand a high spec. PSU, hence the supplied PSU relects this. Of course some improvement in the PSU will improve the performance of the DAC, no doubt. But like I said, there are limits to improvements and modifications.

Nah, the detonator is fine with the 3A tranny.. am trying to improve the pre-amp side of it. I am toying with the idea of zero-gain pre-amp with the Det'nator since you have more than one inputs/source to connect. A good PSU will help. Hopefully will have some time to think about this when I am away.. subject to the costs of stuffs that I will require.. they will be in EURO.

Gabanyayaya said...

So if a circuit can work in a simpler way, it will be consider a solution instead the usual way like replacing parts with same spec...but only those who know what their doing la...

Carefull don't kill ur self when shopping bro...tu EURO tu....mampuh den nanti.... ;)

jazzy939 said...

GBY,
I am a minimalist. The less the better! yeah, gotta be careful with EURO. Last I check was selling at RM5.15 per EU1.00.
I wanna get over with all my outstanding projects. Hopefully come July,I have enough time, insyaallah. Thank you for being very patience... and understanding, off course!
You're on motorbike, new fuel price NOT pinching you? :P

Gabanyayaya said...

I'm a cheapskate la...hehe every thing is low cost....

So far I'm not badly effected with the sudden price hike...but more or less it effected in other part or my expenses......ayam naik harga....tepung naik harga....gula naik harga.....api naik harga....except air turun harga... :)

Bro can you get a good quality wire for wiring my CDP...? Now I already have a Canare LV-61S for the repair works but don't know is it good or not since it's not very flexible. This is for the digital output socket. Got a meter here. What do you think...?

jazzy939 said...

BY,
We try to save as much as we can, where we can. Times are hard, worst, it may get harder in future! :(
Canare LV-61S not flexible? Hmmm. I think I have a spare coax about 1.5m in length. Have made 1m for my CDP. SOnically good, can't remember what brand though.. it was for 'mikelanding' but he no longer requires it. I'll update you later, can't seem to find the cable when you need it. Normal..

Found it! Whaddaya know, also a Canare LV-61S!! It's not that hard, kinda flexible. I am using it for my SONY CDP to the Audio Alchemy DAC.I like the sound. Mine is also 1m in length.

So I guess yours should work fine.

Gabanyayaya said...

okie dokie...I guess there's no problem then....I can't imagine how you gonna solder those Canare cable in a very narrow space....

If everything settle before July, then there's a good chance for me to go to KL AV show this July. I wanna compare this long waited amp with those branded showcase amp there... :)

Jazzy do you go to KL AV show annually?

jazzy939 said...

GBY,
Never had the chance to go to one... MAJOR poison! Hehe. Maybe this year I will try.

About the soldering job, we'll see how ler.. small soldering jobs are usually the 'pits'.. :P
